As the number of electric cars on sale has exploded, there’s a wider range of EV options to choose from than ever. From budget-friendly commuters that have more than 200 miles of driving range to high-end technology showcases that are capable of a Pikes Peak-worthy performance, there’s an EV for every lifestyle and budget.
The newest EVs also offer more than just a battery, motor and charging port. They can be loaded with sophisticated cabin tech, a comfortable ride, ample cargo space and a wide array of safety and driver aid technologies. Some even have bidirectional charging that lets you use the car to keep the lights on during a power outage or power tools at work or home.
From the new BMW iX3 to the Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD, there’s plenty of choices for a zero-emissions commute. But the big change is that more mainstream automakers have started making EVs to appeal to families as well. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an improved driving range and offers the option of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that boosts efficiency even further. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Equinox EV has a spacious interior and abundant comfort and convenience features to appeal to families.
Several automakers are also introducing electric versions of their SUVs and trucks. These models may not have the glitz and glamour of the crossovers from the likes of Tesla, but they offer a similar blend of utility and performance that makes them popular with consumers. The new Volvo XC90 EV is one of the most refined options in this segment with a luxurious and roomy interior, excellent driving dynamics and a top-rated warranty. Its competitors include the new Nissan Xterra EV and the Honda ZDX, which is built by General Motors and rides on that brand’s Ultium platform.
There’s also an EV New Cars version of the venerable DeLorean, which looks nothing like the original and is being billed as a high-performance four-seater capable of going from 0 to 88 mph in less than five seconds. And while there’s no word on whether Lucid Motors will bring this futuristic concept to production, it does give us an idea of what the company’s future plans might be for its upcoming electric car lineup.
Volkswagen’s venture into bespoke electric vehicles had a bit of a rocky start, but the ID.7 addresses quality and ergonomic concerns that marred previous electric VWs and has a class-leading driving range of up to 348 miles. Meanwhile, the Honda Prologue is a family-friendly electric SUV that doesn’t radically remake its traditional design but does introduce its technology to a larger audience.
